A solid partnership with students, parents and key stakeholders within underserved communities and communities of color that promotes access to higher education through academic achievement, personal development, leadership and community investment.
SPACE was founded in the Spring of 2000 by Samahang Pilipino as a means to address the low numbers of Pilipin@ students matriculating into the UCLA campus.
At SPACE we promote the value of bayanihan (a Filipino value that encourages togetherness in a common effort).
As an access project, SPACE recognizes and advocates for the needs and concerns of the youth in underrepresented communities that have limited access to higher education. Through our services, we create powerful, meaningful partnerships with youth and create a community of caring, driven individuals that will support each other to meet individual and shared academic and personal goals.
1El Camino College:
At El Camino College SPACE will pair you with a UCLA peer advisor (PA) that will work with you throughout the year to help you set and meet your academic, transfer, and personal goals. ECC General Meetings. Monthly SPACE-run education / college workshops will increase your knowledge and skill regarding the transfer process.
El Camino College - Wednesdays and Thursdays, 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm
2High School Sites:
SPACE offers free peer advising and tutoring at Belmont and Marshall High Schools. These services are quite different from other tutoring and peer advising programs.
As we understand that academics is a significant part of a student's development, tutors from UCLA can provide assistance in all subjects - from AP Calculus to English to Foreign Language. Workshops and educational discussions are also part of SPACE's services. These workshops serve to educate students on issues that they may not necessarily discuss during their school time. Topics range from politics, culture, the college process and SAT prep literature.
Belmont High School - Wednesdays and Thursdays, 3:30 pm - 6:00 pm
Marshall High School - Wednesdays and Thursdays, 3:30 pm - 6:00 pm
3Conferences and Field Trips:
SPACE offers conferences and field trips that are a space where both our High School and College students can come together in one communal space. In these field trips, space offers workshops which focus on both academic and personal topics.
4Student Staff Program:
SPACE offers a program in which students on site have the opportunity to become a part of the SPACE staff. At the high school sites, students will be peer tutors and at the College site, students will be peer advisors.
5Internship and Volunteering:
SPACE offers an internship and volunteering component for current UCLA students to be able to to become involved with the project throughout the year.
6Parent Investment Component:
SPACE recognizes the importance of parent involvement. We establish relationships with parents in order to learn from them as well as to aid them in knowledge about graduation and college requirements. We engage in phone calls, workshops, and home visits in order to strengthen our relationships with parents.
