Founded in 2002 by Janet E. Brown and the Campus Retention Committee (CRC), the Writing success Program helps students find their voice by working with them in the writing process. By asking questions, listening and discussing, we empower students to take ownership of the writing experience and help bring out the strength and clarity of their ideas.
The goal of the Writing Success Program (WSP) is to support the Student Retention Center’s goal of retaining and graduating conscious & empowered students. We will do this by giving students the tools to think and write critically, thus contributing to their academic and holistic growth. We provide one-to-one writing counseling to students in all their writing needs, from research papers to personal statements. WSP’s effort is to ease writing anxieties, build writing confidence and develop critical thinking and analytical skills for students to be effective and potent in their communication. We pride ourselves on a unique methodology that fosters divergent thinking to recenter the student within the writing process, bring out the student’s voice and give validity to their ideas. Furthermore, WSP strives to support students by developing a more compassionate, non-judgmental and confident understanding of self, encouraging them in the proactive pursuit of their goals and dreams.
The Writing Success Program was founded in 2002 by Janet E. Brown and students from the Campus Retention Committee (CRC). Prior to this establishment, Janet E. Brown would informally help students with their writing process to effectively achieve writing that “says what you mean”. Since the Community Programs Office has a history of working with first generation college students, non-traditional students and students from underserved communities with inadequate preparation for college-level writing, the CRC recognized a need for a writing program on campus that challenged students to think and write critically. The Writing Success Program is not a tutoring or proofreading service. We believe the power and knowledge lies within the student; the Writing Success Program helps students find their voice by facilitating a process of self-discovery. By asking questions, listening and discussing, we empower students to take ownership of the writing experience and help bring out the strength & clarity of their ideas.
The Writing Success Program believes in the power of words to transform, impact and inspire. Through the writing process, we give students the tools to think and write critically, thus contributing to their holistic growth and ability to be an agent of change in the world. By developing a more compassionate, non-judgmental and confident understanding of self through the writing process, students discover their voice and power as human beings in the pursuit of their own happiness.
